Shining a Light on the Arts Engagement Team: Introducing Eric Hagen and Rio Villa Ezell

This summer Arts Engagement had the privilege of inviting local artists to perform on our plaza for Begin Again: San Diego Sessions, a free concert that celebrated the spirit of the musical. We put out a call for local musicians, singer/songwriters, and vocalists to submit auditions and from there, 20 were selected for the final performance.

How do we make meaningful community engagement opportunities like these happen? Meet Eric Hagen and Rio Villa Ezell, part of the Arts Engagement producing team that helped make the event such a success.

How were the artists selected?
We essentially held a virtual open call for local singers and songwriters. Artists submitted a short application along with a video performance, and a panel of producers and staff from The Old Globe reviewed every submission.

What was the greatest challenge you encountered in the selection process?
The hardest part was narrowing the field. There was an incredible range of talent, and we found ourselves wishing we could invite everyone. After many conversations and repeat viewings, we selected a group of artists whose voices, styles, and stories reflect the richness and diversity of our region.

What was the most interesting aspect of working with so many local singer/songwriters?
Discovering just how much incredible musical talent exists in our own backyard. We received more than 180 submissions from artists across the region, and the quality was extraordinary. From deeply personal original songs to beautiful interpretations of beloved music, every submission was a reminder that creativity is thriving in San Diego. It was inspiring to witness so many of our neighbors sharing their artistry, and a privilege to help create a platform for it.

Why is this type of engagement so important?
The Old Globe has a responsibility not only to produce great theatre, but to champion the artists who make our region such a vibrant cultural community. Programs like this create meaningful opportunities for local artists to share their work with new audiences while inviting our audiences to discover the incredible creative community that exists beyond our stages. It’s an investment in San Diego’s artistic ecosystem and a reminder that great storytelling is happening all around us.
